History

Sandown & Lake YFC

Sandown & Lake YFC has been competing in youth football since 1973, having had many accomplishments over the years.

In the early days Sandown and lake Youth was run by Des Bowler, Alan Hawkins and Hugh Riches. In those days there were probably only 3 teams covering U11, U13, U15. This was because at the age of 15 you could play senior football. Of course, there were no girls teams in those days, but gladly that has changed over the years.

A family friendly club, we offer the opportunity for all children (boys and girls) to enjoy the sport of football, regardless of ability. Our ground at Fairway Park, The Fairway, Lake, is loaned to us by Lake Parish Council and we also have an additional playing/training area next to The Hurricanes Rugby Club, Station Approach, Sandown, which is where the first teams back in 1973 played their matches.

We run a number of teams in many age groups from mini soccer to 11-a-side. We have further developed the club and increased participation in football with our Junior squad (children age @4-6yrs, school years reception, 1 and 2)

Many team managers and assistant managers are at least Level 1 FA Coaches, some are Level 2 qualified and all hold a current CRC. The Team Manager is responsible for the day to day running of their individual teams.

Sandown FC Club History

Sandown Football Club was established in 1880 and is one of the oldest clubs on the Island. For the first 18 years of its existence, SFC only played friendly matches as the Isle of Wight Football League was not started until 1898.

Over the years, we have had various successes, however in the 70’s & 80s SFC played Hampshire League Football at the Fairway Park, Sandown. Regularly playing to crowds of 400+ Fairway park was a real old fashioned ground with a large wooden stand which was regularly packed with local supporters.

Like most modern day teams SFC saw a gradual decline in playing numbers over many years and it wasn’t until recently that the club has seen an increase in interest.

Today, SFC plays its home games not far from Fairway Park at Sandown Bay Academy. We have two adult teams and still continue to provide football to the Sandown community 140 years after our predecessors started this great club.
